CANKER IN SOUTH FLORIDA
We at Green Wise Group are issuing this WARNING
to all municipalities, associations, public, private
and commercial properties. There is a new variant
of a fatal fungal infection that is rapidly spreading
throughout south Florida. This fatal fungal infection
is known as “ HYPOXYLON CANKER”. This
infection is most common in Oak trees, however
all hardwood trees are susceptible. In particular,
moderate to old growth trees are susceptible.
Yes, it is true - all our beautiful, large, established,
mature trees are in immediate danger. Our observations
and research over the last few years indicate
that the species Ficus may now be the primary
target through which Hypoxylon Canker is rapidly
spreading.
It has not yet been established exactly how this
new fungal variant is vectored. What is known
is that once a tree is infected and showing fruiting
structures of Hypoxylon, the tree will not survive,
regardless of treatment. It is extremely contagious
and early symptoms of the disease are not that
obvious to the untrained eye. We at Green Wise
Group know how to diagnose and identify it accurately,
and we can extend the life of some infected trees.
Please read our pro-active checklist to
see if your trees are at risk:
1. Do you have moderate to old growth
large trees? Ficus trees?
2. Have your trees ever been
stressed from tropical storms or hurricanes?
3. Have your trees ever been
stressed by drought?
4. Have your trees ever been
weakened / defoliated by insect infestations?
(i.e., Ficus Whitefly, Wax Scale or Sooty Mold
)
5. Are your trees subject to
soil compaction or near a construction site?
6. Have trees been suddenly exposed
to intense sunlight due to topping?
